While points leader Brock was in the UK, Grice was missing too (he had no funding for this race) and Nissan decided to give the race a miss in favour of some more development.
After dry practice, the race started on a damp track and most of the field opted for slicks. Moffat was beaten by Johnson, Harvey, Masterton and McLeod after the start. Masterton lost touch while Richards moved up, and by lap 6 rain began to fall with the order being Johnson, Harvey, McLeod, Richards and Moffat. After a few laps, the order changed and by lap 17 Johnson led ahead of McLeod, Moffat and Harvey. Then it happened: Moffat attacked McLeod right at the moment Willmington’s Falcon had to be lapped. Moffat moved over but touched the Falcon, sending himself, Willmington and Harvey off the track at high speed. Moffat came off worst, skating across the wet track up the bank, leaping a tire barrier and slamming head-on into a tree. It meant the end of the car as well as the season with a broken bone in his hand.
Johnson won over McLeod and leapt ahead at the points table.
