Despite the absence of the works-tacked Rovers and Metro Turbos (the Austin Rover Group withdrew its cars since they were far from pleased with the way protests and scrutineering were handled; and this was even before the outcome of the 1983 championship - for which the Rovers were declared illegal, handing the title to Rouse and his Alfetta GTV), the seventh round of the troubled Trimoco championship promised some fine racing. James Weaver's awesome car control planted the revitalised BMW GB so close to pole-winning Andy Rouse's ICS Rover, that the time keepers found only 0.01s between them. Alas, the new electronic 'engine mismanagement', in Weaver's disappointed words, let the BMW down on the warming up lap... Further back the potential of four Ford RS 1600is practising within 0.46s of each other was rewarded with a proper 'race to the wire' from Richard Longman and Rob Hall, the verdict going to former Fiesta champion Hall, while Longman compensated with a faster lap.
All the fastest laps counted as new records, as the then-Tricentrol series last visited Snetterton in 1978 with Group 1 machinery. Jon Dooley's class-winning Alfa set a time within 0.02s of Jeff Allam's previous outright record (3.0 Capri), while Rouse recorded a new outright Group A record of 1.11,98s (95,87mph).
"It was very straightforward with no James," said a relaxed Rouse afterwards, as the cars were released from drama-free scrutineering. "I wasn't pushed... and the tyres will last all day at a second off the pace!" (MN)
