It was an experiment to mix the Group A field with some Renault 5 Turbos and the Toyota, but the audience loved it and it brought us a nice race. Fastest in qualifying had been the Camaros of Vermeulen and Hemmes, with two Renault 5 Turbos on row 2 and 3, split by van der Beek’s Mazda.
The Mazda was away quickest, fighting for the lead with Vermeulen and Lammers, whose start had been even better. Lammers took the lead, while van der Beek disappeared with a broken differential. Hemmes retired as well with zero oil pressure, and Lammers had a big lead, which he lost during the required pit stop for fuel; it took ages to get 20 litres in, resulting in a big lead for Vermeulen. But lap after lap Lammers closed, sometimes with over five seconds a lap, since Vermeulen had to keep an eye on the oil pressure light, especially in right-hand corners. In the last lap, Lammers went by and won the race in front of the excited spectators.
