Johnson’s only worry this race was Brock, back from Silverstone in fine form, while Nissan made a return as well. Grice was back too, but more important Bob Morris, 1979 champion came out of retirement with the ex-Barry Jones Mazda RX7.
Brock claimed pole ahead of Morris with Johnson only seventh - an indication of how competitive the field was.
Masterton jumped the start and took the lead, with Morris, Brock and McLeod following. Masterton got a penalty unsurprisingly but he soon retired anyway.
But while leading, Brock’s car snapped the tailshaft, courtesy of the incident with Harvey at round 4, so Morris could take over and won over McLeod and Johnson who was right on his tail.
The only other in contention for the title apart from Johnson was now Peter McLeod, consistent as well.
