The final showdown: Strycek would be champion, unless Grohs won and he would finish fifth or lower. Again, Vogelsang entered two extra cars: Brun-635s for van Ommen and Winkelhock, though the latter soon gave up and handed the car to Jelinski, who couldn’t shine either. In practice, Strycek was the faster BMW (third on the grid) since Grohs left his qualifying effort too late - the rain had already begun; he could not do better than fifth, his helpers van Ommen (13) and Jelinski (16) even further behind. Fastest had been Stureson ahead of John.
In the race, Grohs had the better start and was fourth behind Stureson, Manthey and John. Strycek was only seventh, having troubles to see the soaked track. Vogt had joined the leaders meanwhile, and was second behind the Volvo, though it was not him but Manthey who took the lead in lap 14, after a light touch. Only two laps later, it was Vogt in the lead while John had taken second. The rain was a good recipe against overheated brakes, and he was able to pass Vogt and take the lead - which he kept until the end. Manthey finished second, ahead of Vogt , Andersson and new champion Strycek. Grohs was a disappointed eight, with multiple excursions off the track. Five wins and no championship, against Strycek, zero wins but champion...
