Walkinshaw was back with three improved cars, which were much faster than anything else. And that was not the only nasty surprise for BMW; there was also a pair of TWR Rovers, which qualified near the Jaguars, and then - no BMW, but a Volvo Turbo. Fastest BMW was the Schnitzer car of Ravaglia and Berger, both hotshoes from Formula 3, ahead of numerous other BMWs.
But the race was a different story. Just like the old days, a huge field of well-prepared cars took the start, and soon it was obvious that Rover would play no major part in the race - both cars retired. But before that, the Volvo of Lindström and Simons passed the Rovers and the Jags too, and took the lead after one quarter of the race. Then mayhem at Jaguar: both Percy and Brundle retired. But there were more victims: Quester retired with zero oil pressure, the second Schnitzer car of the youngsters retired close to he end of the race when Ravaglia damaged the oil cooler. The Hartge team was not lucky either, Cecotto and Surer retired when water entered the electrics.
Meanwhile, the Volvo fell back after Simons had taken over from Lindström; 8 seconds a lap slower with a healthy car... Walkinshaw and Heyer retook the lead after an erratic tire choice with Kelleners and Brancatelli (BMW Italia) in second; at the line, the Jaguar had a lead of 7,7 seconds - after 500 kilometres!
