Because of the great number of Jaguar guests, TWR used qualifying tires for the first time - and got a 1-2-3 on the grid, without even taking part in the final session. BMW on the other hand had handling troubles, the Eggenberger car one second slower than last year!
But the race was a different story. The Jags took the lead, but soon the number 2 car came in for a tire change; Heyer broke a rim and was lucky to be able to get to the pits. On top of this, they ran into brake troubles later in the race, just like the third car. Rover even fared less well; Hahne/Duez had a broken gear lever and finished tenth in the end, while Soper lost an engine.
BMW had troubles too, the Hartge team still having drastic problems with their electronics (they just made it into the race). The British 635 of Weaver and Woodman did not seem to be fully legal (the tank was placed lower than usual, and the mounting points for the rollbars were changed. They finished second, ahead of Stuck and Quester who were not allowed to protest against another BMW... Other BMW victims were the second Schnitzer car (exploding fire extinguisher) and Brancatelli, who ended the race of the BMW Italia car in the barriers.
By the way, the #2 Jaguar of Percy and Nicholson won the race...
