Andy Rouse overcame the challenges of both the weather and Steve Soper to take his privately entered Rover Vitesse to victory in the opening round of the Trimoco British Saloon Car Championship at Donington on Sunday. The weekend was plagued by atrocious weather conditions, rendering Saturday's first practice session a complete washout. The second wasn't a lot better but saw Tony Pond, making his race debut in a Rover, celebrating in fine form with pole position. Steve Soper, shaking down one of TWR's ETCC Rovers made the best start in the race to head Rouse, but the latter was soon past and was never challenged. BMW's weekend was something of a tale of woe, considering the potential shown by the marque at the Leicestershire circuit last season. Vince Woodman crashed badly in practice and in the race Frank Sytner lost any chance he had of challenging the leaders with tyre troubles. James Weaver was a victim of heavy rain late on in the 30 lap race. Patrick Watts took a comfortable win in Class B at the wheel of his Metro Turbo, whilst Chris Hodgetts entertained a damp crowd with a Class C winning performance in his Escort RS1600i. (MN) |
