Zolder in Belgium provided a fitting finale to the best season of European Touring Car Championship racing, with the fight for the title of European Champion Touring Car driver in doubt to the end. The three and a half hour grind promised much for Britain with five of the fastest seven cars in practice prepared in the UK. Ultimately the squad of BMWs proved too much even for the fantastic lap efforts of Win Percy in the surviving Jag of Tom Walkinshaw/Martin Brundle. The man who beat Jaguar with Alpina-BMW in 1977 (aided by Tom Walkinshaw) repeated his Euro title success, Dieter Quester almost looping his factory-backed Schnitzer BMW over the pit wall in wild celebration. Tom Walkinshaw literally threw in the towel as the BMW careered past, affirming to the BBC cameras, "We won't give up. We'll be back next year." The race? Equally dramatic with leaders including Stefan Bellof in a "definitely one-off" first saloon ride for BMW. When the brilliant F2/Group C youngster pulled out with "terrible vibrations, we think it was a propshaft," after 35 laps it was left to the BMWs to scrap amongst themselves for victory. The issue was decided on the last lap when Belgian rallyist Marc Duez found his Hartge BMW "had not enough fuel to pick up in the corners" and was beaten to the line by just over a second by veterans Helmut Kelleners /Umberto Grano (Eggenberger Motorsport 635).
