Pleasing the goodly crowd of locals and fellow countrymen that had attended, the Bastos Juma Racing Team scored a popular success in the Spa 24 Hours saloon classic last weekend, when Thierry Tassin, Hans Heyer and Armin Hahne took its BMW 635 CSi to a comfortable win. This was made possible by a host of misfortunes which befell leading rivals, and by a high standard of driving and preparation, coupled with a good reliability factor; the decision of one wheel to go walkies during the night made little difference, the eventual winners had no real bothers apart from that. Leading rivals fell by the wayside rather readily; both Jaguars were out by Sunday morning, the likely looking victors Kelleners/ Grano/Cecotto had a differential go, one Schnitzer BMW blew its engine within the first few hours, and the second looked as though it might just make up the early disappointment, until a slipping clutch kept it back in an eventual second place in the hands of Manfred Winkelhock/Dieter Quester/Carlo Rossi. Trying to catch the stricken Schnitzer car towards the end, the Rover of Jeff Allam/Peter Lovett (with a little help from Steve Soper) took a worthy third after a lengthy untroubled performance. Winning the classes, the Gianfranco Brancatelli/Rinaldo Drovandi/Emilio Zapico Alfa GTV6 was simply a cut above the rest of the middle group, while the tiddlers were led home by a couple of Toyota Corollas, hopelessly sluggish at first sight, but devilishly reliable. In all, an interesting race, although the high rate of attrition precluded any hopes of a particularly exciting finish. (MN) |
