In a race reduced to 15 laps as a result of earlier delays and soggy conditions, Steve Soper celebrated his debut race appearance in the large capacity class of the British Saloon Car Championship with a narrow win at Silverstone on Sunday. Soper led home a Rover 1-2-3, with his more experienced team mates Jeff Allam and Peter Lovett following him across the line in what was an interesting, if not entirely auspicious, start to the new Trimoco GpA Championship. The TWR Rovers were quite simply in a class of their own; fortunately, the three drivers were of sufficiently equal calibre to keep the race for the lead alive until the end. Elsewhere, most of the battles could be found in the baby class, which was won (surprise, surprise) by one Win Percy. Any hopes of a close race in the middle class weren't helped by a dismal three car entry, Hamish Irvine taking the spoils as the only class finisher. All this may sound a little harsh. In retrospect, the race was actually quite entertaining, although there remains a lot to be done before the halcyon days of Group 1 can be relived... (MN) |
