Although Jeff Allam finally broke his recent run of bad luck at Silverstone last Sunday, taking his second Group A win of the year, second place was enough to clinch the overall British Saloon Car Championship title for Allam's Rover team mate Steve Soper. The main challenger to Soper, Peter Lovett, never recovered from a bad start, and could do no better than fourth at the end, having been passed by the flying Colt Starion of Dave Brodie. Completing the top six were final Class A points scorers Jonathan Palmer (BMW 635 CSi) and Tony Lanfranchi (Opel Monza). The race was a rather tame conclusion to the first year of British Group A, but had its moments of interest nonetheless. Brodie's performance was one of the highlights, as was the battle for fourth spot between Lovett and Palmer. A high rate of attrition left several gaps in the field, particularly in Class B, where Andy Rouse romped home an easy winner after all three MG Metro Turbos hit tire trouble at the same corner on the same lap! Of the race's 11 pit stops, the Metro trio made eight between them, presenting a reasonable case for the Monopolies Commission. Well, far into the 1984 season the protests of Donington finally were decided - against the TWR team, who were declared to have used illegal rockers and bodyshells. The champion was Andy Rouse! |
