A broken retaining clip on the bonnet of the leading Walkinshaw/Nicholson car deprived the TWR-Jaguar team of a clear victory in Sunday's Monza 500 km race, opening round of the ETCC, After two pit stops in which the crew fixed the bonnet with lots of adhesive tape the car dropped back to fourth place behind three BMWs, Eventually Dieter Quester and Carlo Rossi won in their Schnitzer-prepared 635, by a mere 3,5 seconds from Chuck Nicholson who did all he could in the last couple of laps and managed to repass Boutsen and Hahne. This endurance race thus became a sprint thriller in the dying stages and proved that the ETCC has become a really competitive series this year. (MN) |
