Jaguar won this race on home soil, but not without some drastic measures, like passing under yellow and the second Jag blocking the leading BMW - according to the German press. The Jaguars were dominant in practice, and with the help of soft rain rubber Walkinshaw soon had a lead of 17 seconds over Kelleners. After one hour, the Jag was still in the lead, now over 40 seconds, followed by the BMWs of Kelleners and Heyer and the second Jaguar of Fitzpatrick. Kelleners came in for a tire change, and then the leading Jaguar had a lengthy stop of 56 seconds. Now the Schnitzer car of Heyer was in the lead, while the second Schnitzer car lost a wheel shortly after Stuck had taken over from Brun. In the end, the car still finished third.
The Jaguar of Walkinshaw and Nicholson now came in, pushed by Nicholson since it had ran out of fuel! They lost any chance of a win, but the second Jaguar was still well underway with young Brundle behind the wheel - who drove a second faster each lap as Walkinshaw, and unlapped himself from Quester. In the end, the Jag won with a little help from his friends; the Schnitzer protest was rejected.
