Benefiting from the demise of Rover team mate Peter Lovett, and the last lap defeat in Class B of Andy Rouse, Steve Soper moved a step closer to the British Group A title at Donington Park last Sunday. In what was the best race so far in this year's Trimoco Group A series, the ninth of 11 races in all, Soper withheld a strong late challenge from poleman Hans Stuck, whose BMW 635 CSi suffered a lack of front brakes from a very early stage. The race was led initially by championship leader Lovett, until he spun into retirement on the ninth of 30 laps. Thereafter, Soper fended off all that Bavaria could throw at him to take a well-deserved victory. In the classes, Rouse looked to have things sewn up in the middle section, until he was caught on the last lap by Tony Pond, who recovered brilliantly from a second lap spin, which followed a contretemps with Tony Lanfranchi's Opel Monza. In the smallest class, a fine battle between the RS1600i of Chris Hodgetts and the VW Golf of Alan Minshaw finally went the way of the latter after the Escort driver lapsed onto three cylinders before the end. And of course there were the inevitable protests, involving the Rover and BMW camps. As the contest on the track finished, the technical argy-bargy off it resumed... Crossroads could do no better.
