The destiny of the 1983 British Saloon Car Championship remains undecided, following Peter Lovett's success at Brands Hatch last Monday, in the 10th, and penultimate, Trimoco Group A round. Once erstwhile leader, and championship favorite, Steve Soper was slowed by tyre troubles, Rover team mate Lovett swept by to take an emphatic victory, while Soper clung on to second place only by the skin of his teeth from a charging Hans Stuck (BMW 635 CSi). With Andy Rouse (Alfa GTV6) sewing up Class B once both Metro Turbos had expired, the most exciting class battle was, as usual, in the smallest division. After a rarely quiet time on the track, the Escorts of Rob Hall and Chris Hodgetts became embroiled in a mad dash for the line, sharing the same race time although Hodgetts was awarded the laurels. With the final round of the series just four weeks away at Silverstone, Soper and Lovett are separated by just two points in the title chase, and one of them is almost certain to take the crown, Rouse only having a mathematical chance of equaling Soper's current points tally.
