"Halfway through I didn't think we would do it. Up to 15 laps I didn't have time even to read the pit board, they just wouldn't give me room: all of us in that first four led sometime! Now I'm just proud to have won." Jeff Allam, summarizing how youth and a near 106 mph record lap for the TWR Sanyo Rover, defeated three of Britain's most experienced drivers - Vince Woodman, Andy Rouse and Gordon Spice, in that order - who drove Britain's most experienced saloon: Ford's Capri 3-liter. Round 6 of the Tricentrol Championship had everything: a fabulous four-way battle for the lead throughout its 20 laps; two new class records and, unfortunately, a massive multiple accident. Pete Hall's Toyota T-boned Mike Buckley's Escort RS2000 at Club Corner on the third lap, also eliminating John Spiller (Talbot Ti). Hall was X-rayed and later pronounced fit but Buckley was retained at Northampton General Hospital to treat a dislocated hip. The general order of the lower classes saw the Toyota Corolla of Win Percy knock up another immaculate drive to class victory, and a new 101,24 mph class record. Richard Longman got through that early accident keeping an advantage to the end over a thrilling Metro match between Alan Curnow, Neil McGrath and non-finisher Roger Saunders. There was a change in the now open 1601 - 2500 cc division though, Special Saloon Skoda expert Tony Dickinson taking his Escort RS2000 to its first class victory and twelfth overall.
Just five Tricentrol rounds to go and this Silverstone thriller leaves the Tricentrol standings with Win Percy apparently invincible on 60 points, Longman on 40, the much on form Vince Woodman with 38 and the temporarily retired Terry Nightingale, whose Mazda was driven to second in class this weekend by Mike Kimpton, still has 37 points. In the manufacturer series Toyota leads 54 to the 51 of BL's Metro and 45 for Capri. (MN)
