Wet or dry, Jeff Allam in the Sanyo-backed Rover was in total command of Saturday's opening round of the Tricentrol British Saloon Car Championship. In both practice sessions Allam dominated proceedings, whilst in the race itself he was in an unassailable lead within four laps of the start and ran out an easy victor by almost 22 seconds. Trailing the Rover into second and third places were the Ford Capris of Andy Rouse and Vince Woodman. West Countryman Woodman had been Allam's nearest rival, but tyre problems slowed him. Class victories in a fairly processional 20 laps went to Terry Nightingale (Mazda RX7), reigning champion Win Percy (Toyota Corolla) and Richard Longman (Metro). It was the latter class which produced the now almost obligatory saloon car protest, this time a row over the use of coil spring/damper suspensions to replace the standard Hydragas system. Fourth in class Neil McGrath's car uses the standard system whilst class winner Longman and third placed Steve Soper have coil springs/dampers. The situation is to be clarified by the RAC MSA, and all results were declared provisional.
