The last Tricentrol Group 1 Championship race stunned onlookers with some amazing aerobatics included in a race that provided the most apt point for Gp1 to make way for Group A in 1983. Eighth-fastest qualifier Peter Lovett won in a plethora of tire-melting late-braking maneuvers that saw early leader Gordon Spice's Ford Capri pit for new rubber. Big class Championship contenders Vince Woodman (Capri) and Jeff Allam (Rover) fought for much of the race over that title in the toughest struggle ever seen for supremacy in this division, Woodman visiting the track side scenery at least twice, courtesy of Rover V8 power. The wounded Capri eventually finished seventh and Allam fifth, the latter despite having a lack of brakes for the last quarter of this hectic 20-lapper. In scenes of championship confusion Allam and Woodman were both feted by their teams as class winners, but by Monday the RAC had informed us that the decision - justly in view of his shrewd performance and on-track position - had gone to the works-backed Rover of Jeff Allam for the second year.
In the classes Steve Soper was the only man to set a new record at 1.48,30 (97,48 mph) in the Hepolite Metro, which once again defeated Richard Longman's Datapost Metro. For the first time 1982 Tricentrol Champion Win Percy (Toyota Corolla) was defeated by a Class B representative, although the Toyota maintained its perfect Class C record despite failing fuel pressure. Beating Win out of eighth overall was Class B winner Jon Dooley (Alfa Romeo GTV/6).
It had needed a very special race to mark the end of Gp1 in the UK, and the final round of the 1982 Tricentrol RAC British Saloon Car Championship was just such an event... (MN)
