After his performance in the opening round of the Tricentrol British Saloon Car Championship, Jeff Allam (3.5 Rover V8) was quietly confident of success at Mallory Park on Sunday. He was not letting himself become complacent however, knowing that he would have to work hard to win on a circuit that was much better suited to the Capris. From the line it was Allam who took the lead, pulling out a comfortable lead until his tyres started to "go off" at the mid-way stage. This allowed Vince Woodman (3.0 Capri) to close the gap, but not pass, before he too started to suffer with tyre problems. Gordon Spice's Shell Oil-backed Capri was third. Terry Nightingale (Mazda RX7) meanwhile took an easy class win from a very spirited Hamish Irvine (Triumph Dolomite), and a distant James Burrows (Toyota Celica). In the second race, for the smaller capacity cars, it was Win Percy who again showed his dominance, very nearly equalling his own Class B record in the Class C Toyota Corolla. John Morris (Golf GTI) was a comfortable second, with the very much improved VW Scirocco of Tony Lanfranchi third. In Class D an almost unending stream of problems for all the more competitive Metros meant that Jon Dooley (Alfasud Ti) inherited the win from Roger Saunders (Metro) and Richard Longman (Metro) who was five laps adrift after a tyre change.
