Donington Park's ninth round contribution to the Tricentrol RAC British Saloon Car Championship featured fantastically close grid times at the front, a yawn of a 24-car race and the certainty that the 1982 title belongs to 38-year-old Win Percy. His perfect season of lap records and class victories continued with a fine sixth overall in the Team Toyota GB-Hughes of Beaconsfield Corolla 1600, ensuring Percy's third consecutive British saloon car title. Toyota can now do no worse than share equal victory in the manufacturers' series with BL's Metro. For Weymouth Mazda dealer Win it was another routine day of polished professionalism, but up front Jeff Allam had to work his way past Vince Woodman's pole position Capri before the Ford blew its V6 in an awesome pall of smoke before a fifth of the 25 laps were covered. Allam won by nearly eight seconds after driving, "a tight race: we'd chosen softer pads than I wanted and the softer 832 Dunlops, so I knew I had to be sensible." It was Jeff's fourth win in the series this year, bringing the Rover v Capri score line to 5-4 in favor of BL's big hatchback. Like John Morris (VW Golf GTI) and eight other non-finishers, Brands winner Peter Lovett was out of luck. At least Lovett managed to recover from another wheel and tire valve incident and consequent pit stop to finish fifth behind the Capris that trailed Allam home - Andy Rouse, Gordon Spice and Graham Goode.
Class winners besides Allam and Percy included Steve Soper, with his second Donington triumph over Richard Longman's similar Metro (a lot easier than their July encounter), and another victory for the immaculate Neil Brown-engined Escort RS2000 of Tony Dickinson.
Allams win propels the Epsom based car and van hire manager to third overall in the Tricentrol driver points stakes. The prestigious big class title fight will therefore be between Allam and Woodman in the remaining two Championship rounds. (MN)
