Tom Walkinshaw, mastermind of Jaguar's July victory over the German "home teams" at Nürburgring and proprietor of TWR, walked slowly around the pale blue Sanyo Racing with Esso Rover V8. Fresh from the scrutineering bay, only the deposits of black disc brake dust told onlookers that this was the Dunlop-shod victor of the Tricentrol RAC British Saloon Car Championship's eighth, and most prestigious qualifying round. "Aye, that's almost perfect Peter", purred the powerful Scot at the pristine survivor amongst a field full of stock car racers; "but you realize I'll have to take a couple of pounds off for the worn tyres!" Peter Lovett's race had been as near perfection as was possible, leading all but the opening lap, despite a fracas at Druids that left pole position man Vince Woodman's VMW Motors Capri struggling to regain ground from seventh position. Lovett's new record, set on the same soft rubber as the Capris used for the hot morning race, was some 1.7s faster than the August 1981 record. It was part of a run that saw Lovett record his second GP supporting race win and Rover record their hat-trick. Nearly 6s behind came Gordon Spice after a gallant performance, with Allam's battered Rover a miraculous third and Woodman finally fourth. Yet "man of the race" was Metro-mounted Richard Longman, who prevented another class win by Steve Soper, and Win Percy's final Toyota grasp of this year's Tricentrol title. Longman started from the pit lane, and, weaving his way from the back of the 32 car field to 16th overall, took class victory and record lap at over 88 mph in Datapost's quickest four wheel delivery van. Team mate Alan Curnow was not so lucky, inverting his Metro on the run out of Clearways to Clark Curve, fortunately with little more than a cut lip to show for an exciting ride that followed a collision with Dane Arne Riis (Dolomite Sprint).
Percy continued his perfect points collection run in the series with the third record lap of the race, while Jon Dooley took the improving Napolina Alfa Romeo Dealer Team GTV/6 to the remaining class win. (MN)
