That the Mazda RX7 was a potent car in Britain and Belgium, even winning races outright, wasn’t new; but that is would be capable to beat the Capris and BMWs in the 24 hours of Spa was something new. The fastest one had qualified at the front row besides the Camaro of Wisell; but in the heavy rain, the Mazdas fell back and after lap one it was a Capri in the lead, the car of Feitler and Jaussaud. They stayed in front for two hours, but an hour later it was a Camaro ahead: van Hove, Cremer and Finotto leading over the KWS Capri of Schlesser, Verney and Ferté. But one hour later, the picture was changed again and so it went on until the rain stopped and other teams came to the front: the BMW of Joosen and Andruet, or Spice, or Woodman - and the Mazdas. The order seemed to settle as Joosen/Andruet in the lead followed by Walkinshaw/Dieudonné after nine hours, and it stayed that way until 90 minutes from the end. Then a rocker came adrift in the BMW, the Mazda took over and won. |
