Tom Walkinshaw took his second long-distance saloon car win of the year when he partnered Chuck Nicholson to victory in Sunday's Canon Tourist Trophy at Silverstone. Driving a Group 2 Mazda RX7, Walkinshaw inherited the lead just a few miles from the chequered flag, when the BMW 635 CSi of Umberto Grano/Helmut Kelleners slowed with a slipping clutch. Up to that point the BMW had looked invincible, with Kelleners doing his usual, excellent job of building up a huge lead that the slower Grano could maintain to the finish. The Mazda however, was not without its own problems and ran the entire race with fluctuating oil pressure, which must have worried Walkinshaw especially, as he homed in for the kill. |
