Jeff Allam completed his hat-trick of wins in the Tricentrol Saloon Car Championship, by winning the final round at Silverstone on Sunday. Although not starting from his customary position on the front row, Allam was always with the leading bunch and spent most of the race protecting 3500cc Championship leader and team-mate Peter Lovett from attack. The TWR Rovers took little time to dispose of Rad Dougall, making his first appearance in one of the Patrick Motorsports Rovers and once by, built up a commanding lead. However, with just three laps to go, Lovett's rival for the class, Andy Rouse, retired when his Capri blew its engine, so Allam was allowed past to win and take second place in the big class championship. Dougall started from pole, but after leading the first few laps became embroiled in a hectic dice with fellow PMG Rover-man Brian Muir, which only held them both up. Eventually, Muir retired his car with mechanical problems, but by that time the leaders were long gone and Dougall was under pressure from the soon-to-retire Rouse. Only two Capris finished (in the hands of Vince Woodman and Charles Sawyer-Hoare, fourth and fifth respectively) while Jon Dooley made sure of victory in the 1300cc Championship with lights to flag win in his Alfasud Ti.
A superb dice for the lead of the 1600cc Class saw John Morris emerge on top in his Morris Vulcan Golf GTi from the Toyota Celica GT of Chris Hodgetts. There was no quarter asked and absolutely none given, but not once did these two drivers (who have the utmost respect for each other) touch. After weeks of deservedly bad publicity, this was a fine advertisement for Gp1 racing.
However, yet another protest of the TWR Rovers by certain members of the Capri camp, prompted Tom Walkinshaw to reply with his own action against those self-same teams, and discussions went on far into the evening, the results being provisional. But in the end, all protests were rejected since the parc fermé rules were not followed; some of the cars were close to the transporters, and one even had left the track. Percy’s TWR’s Mazda wasn’t even raced here; already being champion, the risk of disqalification was simply too high...
