"I was lucky! I flat spotted a tyre on the first lap so I started to use the engine as a brake, to avoid doing it again. Now that's something you should never, ever do with a rotary but fortunately it all held together!" So quipped a delighted Win Percy after taking the Tom Walkinshaw Racing Mazda RX7 to its first outright victory in the Tricentrol Saloon Car Championship at Oulton Park on Good Friday. Percy led from start to finish but took the chequered flag only just over a second ahead of the duelling Capris of Gordon Spice and Andy Rouse. Initially in a position to challenge for second place, the engine in Rouse's Daily Mirror/Juicy Jeans Capri wouldn't allow him to maintain Spice's pace and the Southam driver had to resign himself to third place.
The remaining finishers in the first half dozen, the Capris of Vince Woodman and Nick Whiting and the Rover of Rex Greenslade, were rather far apart having disentangled themselves from various disputes, although the other Patrick Motorsport Rover of Brian Muir had all but climbed in through the rear hatch of its sister car by the end!
Chris Hodgetts' Hughes of Beaconsfield Toyota won the "tiddlers" race with such contemptuous ease, that the only problem he had was staying awake! To keep up the concentration, he "slipped in a couple of quick ones" which finally left the class record at 1.10.33s.
