It was Zakspeed all over the place at the Nürburgring: Winkelhock had already shocked his competitors with a pole time of 7.22,01, but in the race he lowered the touring car record to 7.22,42 and he went full speed to the finish, leaving Wollek no chance to keep up. The latter finished second, ahead of Stuck and his M1 and then Ludwig crossed the line with another victory for Zakspeed, now for division 2. Second in class Müller Jr lost 37 seconds and Heyer was even further behind in third, his gearbox stuck in fourth after lap 3.
But all in all, it was a very slim entry if you look at the Group 5 cars: with the loss of the Joest Porsche and the fact that Schornstein preferred to start in Monza and Merl had business obligations the only addition to the group 5 field was Wagner’s atmo 320, another car dating back to 1977. Apart from that, 6 BMW M1s were lacking (some were in Monza as well).
Niedzwiedz had another stroke of bad luck in his ex-Ertl car (who hadn’t been lucky with it last year either); he didn’t finish a single lap in practice, and in the race the mixture was too rich, the engine didn’t pick up and he lost water - enough to quit.

König won the Group 2-4 class in division 1, but Henzler had been faster until he was hit by a backmarker; division 2 was for Selzer, Boller complaining of an old engine.
