Some sad Andy Rouse must have been mad to leave the number 1 Capri team, that of Gordon Spice. But he went his own way, teamed up with Charles Sawyer-Hoare, clocked pole and won the race unchallenged after he had passed early leader Percy, who won the 2300 cc class and was aiming this year for overall victories rather than the championship. It didn’t work out that way here, but second overall and a class win wasn’t anything to be ashamed of. Third went to Woodman and his Capri, while the best Rover finished fifth in the hands of Lovett. The Spice team had a miserable day: Spice had to pit early and Graham had a misfire, and the Rovers had their share of misfortune as well: Muir lost all his oil, Allam’s rear suspension collapsed (though he could continue) and Greenslade’s engine expired like Muir’s had done. The under-1600 race was unexciting: Hodgetts was fastest by a huge margin, but lost his gearbox so Morris took over and held top spot with ease over the Audi brigade of Brundle and Moss.
