"Is a beautiful car. I think the most beautiful BMW I had. Only trouble was to drive so slowly to win. I change up, 5500 rpm, last few laps. Make sure of it, Donington was very, very important to us for this year's Championship." Umberto Grano, 1978 European Touring Car Champion, winked adieu affectionately at the gleaming Enny BMW 635 CSi he and 1980 Champion Helmut Kelleners had just defeated an outstanding Gp2 saloon car entry with at Donington Park on Sunday. While the Pirelli-shod Eggenberger BMW ran faultlessly, it had most definitely not been an ETC bore. Stretching over 4hr41.01m and 504 kilometres, the Donington 500 had such changeable weather that all but the closing stages were a kaleidoscope of changing, and sometimes unlikely leaders. There were some fabulous performances from the lesser classes as the big cars wallowed round in a series of sharp showers and sunshine. A Skoda, one of four works entries, finished sixth in a meritorious performance in such conditions, while Howitt Man of the Meeting Jurgen Pohlmann earned his award in the second place BMW 320i he shared with Dieter Kindlmann by beating off Lella Lombardi/Anna Cambiaghi's Brake-less 5.7-litre Luigi Racing Camaro in a straight fight!
It was that kind of race... (MN)
