In its last Group 5 year, the “Rennsportmeisterschaft” would have had a great field - if divisions 1 and 2 had been combined, which was discussed frequently but to no avail. So we were stuck with two divisions with few favorites: division 1 with the Zakspeed Capri for Winkelhock, a Kremer Porsche for Wollek, a new Joest car in “Moby Dick” form for Mass and last but not least the new BMW M1 turbo, built by Schnitzer for Hans Stuck.
In division 2, there were two real challengers: Heyer with his Lancia and Ludwig with the super-Capri, now in Division 2 form. The rest of the field consisted of cars from 1980 or even earlier, like Becker’s 1977 car. A welcome addition was a second Lancia (Heyer’s 1980car) for Müller Jr.

After a delay of an hour (it might have stopped raining or storming!) the division 1 race was started, but the sand thrown up by the wind had already damaged Stuck’s turbo (as well as that of teammate Brun in division 2). So Stuck retired early, and no one was capable to keep up with polesitter Winkelhock and his ground-effect Capri. Both Wollek and Mass disappointed, Mass complaining of Wollek’s oil on his windshield.

Earlier, the division 2 race had taken place, Ludwig dominating while Niedzwiedz fell back with electrical problems. Heyer’s brand new Lancia was difficult to drive, but second at the finish made Heyer optimistic.
