A heavy shower of rain shortly before the start of Sunday's Tricentrol British Saloon Car Championship, allied to the fact that Jeff Allam's pole-winning Rover expired on the warming-up lap, served to take away a good deal of interest from what otherwise promised a most exciting event. While many drivers struggled to keep their tyres in one piece on the rapidly drying track, Andy Rouse drove a canny race. Going only as fast as he needed to maintain an advantage won in the early laps, he scored a fine win in his Gordon Spice Racing Ford Capri.
Team-mate Spice crashed out on the first lap, having started on dry tyres, while Rex Greenslade's Rover succumbed to tyre failure in the closing stages after a pit-stop to change onto dry rubber. Jonathan Buncombe came through to take second place in his Equipe Esso Capri ahead of the class-winning Win Percy (Pentax Mazda) and Vince Woodman, while Chris Hodgetts (Toyota) and Alan Curnow (Fiesta) won the remaining classes. The biggest winner, however, was Dunlop, whose brand new steel-braced, wet weather radial proved a great success in the conditions.
