Yet again, Stuck and Heyer missed a qualifying session in favour of a Procar race, so Ertl got pole as expected, with Austrian Siller next to him - in a ‘79 Schnitzer BMW. Stuck and Heyer were way behind, courtesy of the weather during their only qualifying session. Especially Heyer had his troubles, trying to get a brand new car (after the Norisring accident) working in the rain. It became worse in the race: right after the start the Lancia pitted to get a plug replaced. There were more victims of lap 1: Stuck’s front spoiler and the rear bodywork of Brun, while Boller was shifted into the emergency exit of the Nocksteinkehre, with dire consequences.
Ertl had a trouble-free run, not hampered by the spray of the wet track, was comfortably ahead, but 5 laps before the end a water hose came loose. It really became clear that the Capri was dying in the last lap, so Stuck played all or nothing and turned up the boost to regions where no human had been before. It did the trick, Stuck just being able to pass Ertl before the end of the race, with Niedzwiedz a distant third.

Division 1 had its share of excitement as well; Manfred Winkelhock, new recruit for the Joest-935 was smoking the last laps. Fitzpatrick soldiered on, but his engine seemed powerless against the Liqui Moly car of Winkelhock. His engine spread oil as well, from the beginning of the race, main victim being Ludwig who had to come in to get his windshield cleaned.

In the Rennsport Trophy, there was an easy victory for Selzer and his powerful Group 4 Escort, the big class was won by a certain Christian Danner, driving an M1 for the first time. He was able to get by the Group 5 Porsche of Böhm soon, while his adversaries had more trouble with the Porsche.
