Many accidents marred the Norisring round of the championship. In division 2, Heyer had made a good start, from fifth on the grid to third, when in lap 6 he heard a bang (it was later discovered to be his left front brake disc) and his car went out of control, disintegrating in a series of rolls. Heyer escaped without injuries. Karl-Heinz Becker, having a fine race in his turbo BMW, but water in the cylinders ended his effort. Water played a major roll in the rest of the race; right after lap 25, rain fell - or better, it flooded the track. The atmo cars seemed to have a field day, but after a few laps race director Leistner showed the yellow and red flag: last lap before the race would be redflagged. Stuck, who had been in second behind Ertl for most of the race, tried a do-or-die at Grundig corner, but he overdid it and lost 100 metres. The next curve, he tried again, with no hope of being able to brake anyway: but he used the barriers, sliding past Ertl who must have been surprised. Unfortunately, the spot Stuck wanted to rejoin the track was blocked with a tire wall, and now but Stuck and Ertl spun and blocked the track. The rest of the field had to wait until the stranded cars could get going, and slowly the cars reached the finish, Ertl just ahead of Stuck. The race wasn’t restarted again, since 35 laps were covered - enough for full points.

Stommelen was unlucky in the division 1 race; he collided with Wollek just after the start, and needed a pit stop to change a tire. Wollek wasn’t so lucky - he retired on the spot. Fitzpatrick in the Barbour Porsche took the lead, and both Ludwig (throttle, than engine failure) or Mass (engine) were unable to respond. Only once the race had some excitement, since here too the race had to be redflagged - and restarted, since the minimum distance was not reached. Schreiber was courageous and started on wets - and he lead the field for thirteen laps, from lap 3 until lap 16, but then the track was dry and the group 5 cars took the lead again. But among them was no longer Stommelen: he tried to compensate for the lost time in the pits, and left his braking point on the wet track far too late and crashed his car. And that was the end for the Stommelen/Jöst liason; just like Plankenhorn and Kremer, the split was taken to court.

No “geldrennen” this year - that part of the race was reserved for the BMW Procar cup.
