The end of the homologation of the CSL BMW had come, so perhaps another manufacturer could win in the ETCC?
Not so. The RCV team, once started with Mazda but fielding mostly BMWs had landed a coup: former ETCC champion Grano bough a seat and the Austrians built a BMW 635 CSi with Alpina engine and their 530 suspension - and ready was the new challenger. Another one was built in Germany for Schmid and Hurler, but that one was way off the pace.
So was there any opposition? Sort of, since the ‘78 AMG Mercedes was brought back into life, though it was sponsorless and even less attractive than before. It was driven by Schickentanz and Denzel - the quality of the drivers perhaps was better than the Austrian BMW, and the Mercedes was even able to take the lead but in the end the BMW had the upper hand and won with 20 seconds in hand. Apart from these two, the BMW 320 of Kelleners/Märki/Dürig was competitive at first, but a bad planning when to switch to slicks on the drying track left them third. But both this and the fifth placed sister car were disqualified for “body or chassis” infringements. Audi won the 1600 cc class and was classified third overall in the end.
