25.000 spectators came by for the opening of the Spanish season. In Group 1 there wasn’t much excitement; polesitter Spinelli took the lead and won the race. In Group 5, the Zakspeed Escort (a Group 2 car) of Peñacoba suffered clutch problems in practice, leaving him ninth on the grid. The short race would make it difficult to beat the Group 5 Seats, but he tried anyhow. After only two laps, he fought the works Seat 131 of Canellas down, and then set off to get the fast Scirocco of Sanz de Madrid. It took him four laps to pass the VW so he won, with Sanz de Madrid second and Canellas third - the latter having oil pressure problems in the last laps. |
