The only two able to clinch the title were Heyer and Stuck. Grohs was available for Schnitzer once again, and that was bad news for Lancia - the collision on the Betonschleife was still fresh. Lancia would counter with 1, 2 or perhaps 3 extra cars; or Heyer could start in Division 1; if it rained, he would have a chance and anyway a fourth was good enough. In the end, only a second car for Ghinzani turned up.
Schnitzer played tactics as well, entering four cars - in the end it were three, Stuck, Brun and Grohs. More excitement: Ludwig was entered in division 2 as well, and nobody knew if this would help Schnitzer - or not. And Ertl was not amused. The thought behind this was that there was a slim possibility that Ludwig’s results for the “wide” car would be reinstated - and a victory over Heyer would give a chance on the title. But it was not to be.
More fun: Heyer would drive a Kremer Porsche - and so he did, from the paddock to the pit lane. Or Stuck and Winkelhock would change cars. Even more fun: Dunlop’s race director Weber talked to the other Dunlop teams “to help Stuck”. Pirelli was furious, and Lancia entered a protest against the Schnitzer engine, after Stuck had chopped off 5 seconds from his practice time - though Ertl still was faster. The engine was okay.

On Sunday, we first had a race for division 1. Both Ludwig (Division 2) and Winkelhock (engine blow up in warmup) were absent, so it became a boring race, with Fitzpatrick leading, Wollek retiring and Merl unable to catch Fitz. And Korten was overwhelmed by finishing third.

And division 2? Stuck’s dream of the championship was over after only 3 kilometres. In fourth, behind Niedzwiedz, and with Heyer on his tail, he tried a desperate move on the Ostkurve, braked far too late and ended in the catch fencing. Heyer applauded on the next straight. That he retired soon after didn’t really matter, nor that Ludwig won the race ahead of Niedzwiedz and Ghinzani.

Trophy: Selzer was much faster in practice than Hamelmann, but the latter had only to finish sixth to clinch the title. In the end, Selzer won and Hamelmann finished fifth - enough for the title. Danner won division 1 once again, his fourth win. A great talent.
