The 50th Zakspeed victory wasn’t an easy one; and it wouldn’t happen in Division 2, that became clear. Endless testing, endless checks; after practice, it was Ertl pole and Niedzwiedz second; but after only nine laps, it was “feierabend” for Zakspeed; Niedzwiedz’s engine expired, while after five laps Ertl’s turbo bearing failed while Soldeck met a Group 2 driver in the chicane and ended in amongst the tyres.
Lancia seemed to be in comparable troubles as well; only third in practice, he went into the pits right after the start - for yet another change of a spark plug. He returned to the track dead last, but worked his way op to - second in the end, behind Stuck who had an easy victory, though Becker had yet another fine race and challenged Hans a little. But this was difficult, since his rear brake disc had exploded in practice - and there was no other to be found in the Diepholz area. He had to start with three brakes, and during the race he lost a cylinder so he had only left three of them too. He lost second to Dauer and his ex-Hohmann car - but that engine lost its water pump belt five laps to the end. So in the end it was Stuck, Heyer, Becker, Boller (Escort Turbo) and Lundgardh with this unique 1.4 Turbo Porsche, which even got the attention of Georg Loos.

The 50th Zakspeed victory had to come from Division 1 then. Ludwig claimed pole in his car which had more than compensated the loss of the wide rear wing: the car now had skirts and a tunnel where the Formula 1 cars of the day only could dream from. But he had Winkelhock next to him, and behind Wollek and Stommelen -m the latter driving the Jägermeister Kremer K3 car.
But Stommelen had a bad start with a misfiring engine, he went into the pits, came back, collided with ex-teammate Merl, went back into the pits again and finally came sixth. Merl’s new colleague, Winkelhock, had taken the lead, followed by Ludwig. But Winkelhock drove too forceful for the Porsche: a spin and then the fuel pressure dropped. But Ludwig had gone in the lead already, without passing: Winkelhock had missed a chicane and got a penalty of 20 seconds. Second place was for Wollek, ahead of the Liqui Moly Porsche, but he was pressurised by Dören in the Weralit-K3 79. “If I say the car is bad, Loos is angry; if I say it’s the tyres, then Pirelli is angry; and when I say the shocks are bad, I’ll get problems with Koni...”

In the “Trophy” it was Hamelmann’s crew who spent the night in the parking garage of their hotel, rebuilding the front of the Escort RS, which had met a tyre pile at the chicane. He finished second in the race behind Selzer. In Division 1, it was Danner in the lead initially, but two (!) punctures and a spin dropped him to third in class, behind Jürgensen and Cramer - the latter making a comeback after seven years!
