After winning the Monte Carlo and Portugal rally, Walter Röhrl came to Brands Hatch - and won again, this time with the little Lancia he shared with Patrese. The Porsche 908/4 sportscar retired, the only car faster than the Lancias - there was a lot to be desired about the entry of this race, however professional the Lancia team was. The two works cars finished 1-2, the private Jolly club fourth - they sandwiched the De Cadenet prototype. The only Porsche 935 in contention, the K3 of Dören, Lässig and Holup could never keep up with Lancia’s pace and fortunately retired - how could they have explained a defeat by a 2-litre car?
The race had to be redflagged after a fatal accident: Martin Raymond’s Chevron had blown its engine, he stepped out of the car to inspect matters and was hit by a dicing pair of cars which spun on Raymond’s oil.
The race was restarted for the minimum distance necessary for full points.
