The works Rover team couldn't have wished for a more timely maiden victory, but that is what Leyland achieved this Sunday as Jeff Allam rocketed through from the second row of the grid with his intermediate-shod car and pulled steadily away to a clear victory.

Local man Nick Whiting took a fine second place with Jeff's last year's car, while Woodman was the first finisher on slick tyres, driving spiritedly into third place with his Equipe Esso Capri.

Win Percy, Chris Hodgetts and Alan Curnow all won their respective classes - no change there - although the Akai-Audis showed they are now really a force to be reckoned with in the ultra-competitive 1600 cc class, while the new Colt Lancers made their debut and also showed promise.
Other interest surrounded the conflict between Stirling Moss OBE and Sir Jack Brabham, although the latter's Renault 5 Gordini was hardly ready, and proved to be not competitive with the other cars in its class. Moss, however, ran strongly on slick tyres until a spin, and a resultant pit-stop lost him a lap.
The race was marred though, by a nasty incident at Westfield on lap 17 which left three cars severely damaged and the track blocked. The results were posted as at 16 laps.
