Entry
With Group 5 falling over backwards, it was unsure whether the Rennsportmeisterschaft would be able to get a quality field again. Winter had been uneasy, with a row since Ludwig quit the Kremer team for Ford despite a contract with the Porsche team for 1980. The Ford offer was tempting: a Division 1 Capri, and the argument was taken to court to be settled. Kremer was without a number 1 driver and promoted Plankenhorn. Loos would be entering a single car for Wollek (the decision was only made on Thursday for the race!), the only novelty being its Pirelli tyres. To round off the favourites of division 1, the fourth one had to be the Joest Porsche for Stommelen, just like last year.
Division 2 looked hardly better, but there was news in the form of a GS Lancia for Heyer, also Pirelli-shod. It had to fight Zakspeed (three cars for Ertl, Niedzwiedz and Soldeck) and Schnitzer (Stuck and Brun). GS fielded BMWs too, but no turbo cars anymore.

Division 1
The wide rear spoiler of the Zakspeed Capri fell through at scrutineering, unsurprisingly. Zakspeed appealed and could start, but to no avail: the car would be declared illegal. In practice, the car qualified third, behind Plankenhorn and Stommelen but ahead of Wollek, who could only use long-distance Pirellis.
Plankenhorn lost the start, handicapped by new tyres since his intended ones were stolen from the trailer during the night. Stommelen took the lead with Ludwig and Plankenhorn fighting for second. Finally Ludwig came second, while Plankenhorn fell back behind Wollek.

Division 2
Heyer’s brand new car (it wasn’t even painted) was good enough for pole while Ertl missed second practice because of a holed piston. Niedzwiedz was third, despite his clutch not operating. Stuck disappointed as fourth quickest, unhappy with the set-up.
Soon after the start, Heyer was 2 seconds ahead of Niedzwiedz while Ertl’s turbo hose had fallen off, reducing the Capri to a 1.4 atmospheric car. When Heyer’s brakes deteriorated Niedzwiedz was able to take over and win - but a second place for Lancia was encouraging enough. Stuck was third, more than a minute behind.
