Tires played a major part in determining the outcome of the first, rain soaked, round of the Tricentrol British Saloon Car Championship, the Goodyear equipped Gordon Spice Racing Capris of Spice (the easy winner) and Chris Craft dominating the event, while the Dunlop runners struggled with their new radials.
Jeff Allam showed himself to be the strongest Dunlop runner, but had to grapple with too much understeer on his Capri, and he was lucky to beat the sensational new 2300 cc class winning Mazda RX7 piloted by Tom Walkinshaw, which was stuck in third gear most of the time!
Richard Lloyd, like Walkinshaw, romped away with his class, but reigning British Champion Richard Longman met his match in the form of fellow Mini driver Alan Curnow.
