The 25th 1000 km race wasn’t as exciting as was hoped for. There were no Group 1 cars this year, but a handful of sportscars was added of which one was in the top-ten (on pole really!), but the Joest-Porsche 908 retired early. The Kremer-K3 took the lead after the start, with Wollek second. But both soon ran into tire troubles, though when the Joest-908 retired the Wollek car was in the lead with the second Loos car following - until that car retired. The Kremer car, seemingly unhampered by broken engine mounts, came up through the field and even took the lead again but after the pit stop it was Fitzpatrick in the lead, with 10 seconds in hand from Ludwig. The run to the flag was exciting at last, Ludwig coming very close to the tail of Fitz on the last straight. Ludwig radioed for permission to increase the turbo boost (granted), he came aside with the Loos car and then... a big bang and in a could of smoke Ludwig crossed the line in second place, 400 metres after Fitzpatrick! Division 1 was won by the atmo-Jägermeister car of Schimpf/Bürger after all five Zakspeed-entered cars (two Capris, one Lotus and two Group 2 Escorts) retired. The Lancia had been in the lead of the class for five hours until the engine expired. |
