Bruno Giacomelli, Umberto Grano and Eddy Joosen took their second consecutive victory in the European Touring Gar Championship on Saturday at Mugello. As at Vallelunga, their victory on the 500 Kilometre, 100 lap race was a very tight one, as overheating again afflicted their BMW CSL 20 laps from the finish. As a result Grano lost a lot of time to the rival CSL of Martino Finotto and Carlo Facetti in the closing stages, but he scraped home by 2.6 seconds. Also completing 100 laps, but 65.4 seconds behind the second placed BMW of Finotto/Facetti, was a third BMW CSL, the Luigi machine of Jean Xhenceval, Pierre Dieudonné and Raymond van Hove.
Grano/Giacomelli/Joosen now lead the ETCC Drivers Championship with 40 points, six more than Escort driver Walter Nussbaumer, who with Hans Heyer finished fourth on Saturday in the best of the Zakspeed Fords.
