After the 1978 season, it became clear that the World Championship could even sink further: in Mugello we had 18 starters, of which four sportscars. Half the 935 population was from Loos, who only came here for Porsche cup points and “to help Porsche”.
Old Facetti stole pole with his 1979 car, since Loos were switching to qualifying tires exactly on the moment the heavens opened for a short while.
Facetti and the rain helped the race to have a little excitement after all, Facetti only fell back after a collision while Wollek had the same wrong rain tires as he had in Zolder. But is was not really important anyway, when finally the track became flooded after just over 5 hours both Loos cars were in the lead, with Wollek having had a stint in both of them. The red flag stopped the race and that might have been the high point of the weekend anyway.
