Dramatically, Martino Finotto and Carlo Facetti in their old BMW CSL lost the lead of Sunday's ETCC race at Brands Hatch, a race they had comfortably headed for 100 of a scheduled 120 laps, when the gear lever broke! Quick repairs were made, but the rival Luigi team were already over a lap ahead as Facetti tried desperately to regain ground. And then, just a few laps later, the green "Jolly Club" car hit a patch of oil and shot into the catch fencing. For the Luigi team of Jean Xhenceval, Pierre Dieudonné and Raymond van Hove, with their familiar CSL, it was a well deserved win, and their second ETCC success of the season. They have now moved into the lead of the Championship, defending points leaders Umberto Grano and Eddy Joosen having retired early on in Sunday's race because of engine failure. A splendid second place fell to the rapid Zakspeed Escort of Klaus Niedzwiedz and Sigi Muller (Jr). To British eyes, however, the most satisfactory aspects of the event were the excellent fifth overall taken by Holman Blackburn and Gordon Bruce in a Tricentrol Gp1 Capri, and the encouraging sixth claimed by the enthusiastic Dave McPherson/David da Costa/ Pete King team with their new Group 2 RS 1800. |
