Fred Frankenhout's Opel Commodore GSE was the only starter in the big class of the Group 1 touring car race at Österreichring on Sunday, and easily won the second round of the Diners Club Trans-Europe Trophy. Fastest in practice, Frankenhout led the 16 lap race from start to finish. Second and third places were quite closely fought, the RS2000s of Hartmut Bauer and Rolf Rosenkrantz dicing for ten laps before Rosenkrantz pulled off, leaving Bauer to finish second. Third, and the only other car remaining on the same lap as the leader, was the class winning 1.6 Audi 80 GTE of Alfons Hohenester. Fourth and winner of the 1300 class was a Fiat 128 driven by Walter Niesner. |
