John Fitzpatrick and his Italian partner Umberto Grano won the third round of the European Touring Car Championship run over 100 laps of Mugello on Sunday. Slowed in the early stages by a loose gearlever and towards the end by a bad vibration from the back end, their BMW CSL finished a little over two minutes in front of the Luigi entered BMW CSL of Jean Xhenceval and Sandro Uberti. Third, several laps down, was the ex-Finotto BMW CSL of 1976 vintage now driven by Fracastoro, Bogani and Lara. Giorgio Francia and Amerigo Bigliazzi took a class winning fourth place with their Autovama Alfetta 2000 GTV after the quicker VW Sciroccos had both encountered trouble. Willi Bergmeister and Jorg Siegrist struggled home fifth with theirs, delayed towards the finish by gearbox failure, while the other Scirocco of Stocker and Novak broke its rear suspension twice. Sixth was the 2-litre Alfa Romeo of Massa/Chiardi, and seventh the 1300 class winning Alfa GTA of the Chiapparini brothers.
In practice, Carlo Facetti and Martino Finotto had been fastest in the latter's very fast BMW CSL. At 2m06.5s, it was 1.1s faster than Grano's car. In the race Facetti and Fitzpatrick diced over the lead for the first five laps, but then the Englishman dropped away when his gearlever came loose. Fitz retook the lead when Facetti had to stop after an hour for fresh tyres, having started on very soft Goodyears. Soon afterwards, Finotto's car began to overheat, forcing it to stop frequently for water and leaving Fitzpatrick/Grano with a big lead. The AMG Mercedes did not appear, being in urgent need of new brake parts that were held up by the German metal workers' strike, but it should definitely go to Salzburgring on Sunday week.
