After some troubles with starting money and the threat that Ertl would break any strike and start with last years’ 2002, the DRM finally took the track for a difficult practice, wet at first practice and drying during second practice.
Both Stommelen and Ertl had new cars, the latter staying in the garage with an eye to the wet track. Stommelen could not practice, since he drove the Swedish GP on Saturday, Ertl taking over the car for a shakedown and set-up.
Division 1 practice saw Fitzpatrick and Ludwig share the front row, with Hezemans on row 3 after a spin and oil on the track.
Höttinger had a surprise pole in division 2, since his car was set up for a wet track but in the dry it was the best guess after all. Heyer was second with the same time. Becker had a turbo engine for the first time, but was a little scared with it. From Austria we had last years’ Schnitzer 2002 Turbo with Manhalter behind the wheel. The Hohmann car for Winkelhock was missing, since testing was not finished yet. I’ve heard better explanations...

Loos refused to play the strategy game, and points leader Hezemans finished only fifth after an eventful race; after a touch with Wollek he had a slow puncture, and while storming into the pits he oversaw Merl, who jumped into the air à la Villeneuve and crashed his car - just like Winter on the same lap in a separate incident. Schurti had a puncture as well, and Fitzpatrick had a coming together with Mayer so Ludwig found himself in the lead - but for only one lap, since Wollek slipped inside. When his engine lost a cylinder, Fitzpatrick could pass again and claim second behind Wollek.

The Division 2 race was less eventful, though there were many retirements: Heyer broke his gear lever while leading, Hahne touched with Manhalter and lost a tire, Nussbaumer had a leaking tank, Brun broke his gearbox and Becker blew a turbo. And since Ertl broke gearbox and differential at the same time, it was Höttinger who won in front of Wolf in the Faltz-BMW, the latter complaining of a gearbox which made shifting difficult.
