Like last year, there was a brand new car in Hockenheim: finally, Zakowski’s answer to the turbo BMW was ready: a very low Capri turbo drew all the attention. Last years’ sensation, the Schnitzer Toyota Celica had a brand new car here as well, after missing much of the season so far. It was a mystery why they still bothered?

Division 1
In first practice, Reinhold Jöst smashed into the pit wall after a broken rim; he seemed to walk away from the horrific accident, but since Halon had been sprayed into the interior while he was still behind the wheel and his wristwatch (which had been in his breast pocket) had been forced into his breast by the seat belts, damaging a lung. He ended up in the intensive care but soon recovered.
The Toyota qualified 6th, behind Ludwig, Wollek, Hezemans, Schurti and Fitzpatrick - the best of the rest, over two seconds back.
The race was difficult, since the combined field was far too large and the difference in speed between a Porsche 935 and a Golf was more than considerable. Ludwig started lapping in lap 3 and it just never stopped. But he kept the lead, behind him Wollek but the Frenchman fell back behind Stommelen after an encounter with a slower car. Nevertheless, he forced Stommelen off the track, passed Fitzpatrick and closed in on Hezemans, the latter being held up by a slower car, of course. Wollek was too close and instead of crashing into Hezemans, he chose the armco instead, leaving behind half the front of his car.
Behind Ludwig, it was now Schurti in second, but than was the maximum possible.

Division 2
The Capri did what was expected and claimed pole in exactly the same time as last year’s pole sitter Ickx and the baby Porsche. Ertl was second, Brun third but way back on the front row. Krebs did his normal routine of driving a few laps (on three cylinders this time), complaining about the car and leaving the circuit.
After the start, behind Heyer and Ertl, Winkelhock touched Brun and the latter retired on the spot, while Winkelhock had to get a new tire. Heyer and Ertl had a nice fight until lap 4, when the Capri lost a piston, enabling Ertl a trouble free victory. Winkelhock returned from the pits, causing mayhem at the back of the field, fought with Hahne (who was third) in a way not dissimilar to what Heyer did to him in Zandvoort; tried to help Höttinger after his spin; had a brief encounter with third Zakspeed man Datzmann; left the track at the Sachs corner, damaging another rim and the front spoiler - he had to make a lot of excuses after the race... just like Nussbaumer, who crashed into poor Hahne.
