For the first time in the history of the Rennsport Meisterschaft, a race at the Avus was held. Dangerous it was; 15 total-losses were counted at the R5 race, and in second practice for division 1 the track was flooded. Since both Hezemans and Fitzpatrick did not set a time in first practice, they would have to start from the rear. They duly did, Hezemans, in a longtail 935, got to the front quickly but had some trouble with Schurti who for a change could challenge right to the end - even Loos wouldn’t have mind to see him win, but Hezemans delivered the goods, 6 tenths in front of Schurti. In division 2, Ertl was fastest in practice and in the race, Heyer was second fastest both in practice and race - he lost the slipstream to Ertl, like Höttinger lost his to Heyer. Heyer himself was slipstream expert after this race; in practice he got a tow from Loos-WC team mate Ludwig, in the race one front the surprisingly quick Brun until the latter retired. And Toyota? Toyota Germany said they released Stommelen to race F1 in Zolder and other Grand Prix... |
